What is a Grill Cloth?
It is usually made from synthetic materials and is weaved in a unique pattern wherein the threads do not come together. It allows the cloth to have different square openings which allow sound to be transmitted accordingly.
Grill cloth is available in different colors and it can be changed when it is old. But make sure not to throw it away because original grill cloth adds to the resale value of the amp should you decide to sell it. It usually depends on the material, but there are some grill cloths that are flame retardant and allow moisture to pass through which helps prevent the buildup of heat under the fabric. The materials used for the grill cloth prevents fading and it can be cleaned using a vacuum brush.
If your grill cloth is old and ragged, it can affect the aesthetic appearance of the guitar amp. However, there is no need to fret, it is actually easy to replace the old grill cloth and use a new one with only a couple of tools. You can now enjoy a new grill cloth and you can freshen up your guitar amp’s appearance.

1. Remove the speakers
It will depend on the amp model you own. There is a chance that you have to disconnect the speakers so you can have access to the frame that is holding the old grill cloth. You can use tape to hold the loose screws on it so you can easily reassemble them back later after you changed your grill cloth.
2. Slowly remove the grill cloth frame
It is normally made from a wooden square and when the cloth is stretched on it, it resembles a canvas stretched on a frame used by painters when they are painting. The frame is attached to the main amp cabinet with screws and brackets. You can use tape to fasten them temporarily in place so you can remember where they will go once you have to reassemble them back later on.
3. Once the frame is removed, you can slowly remove the old grill cloth
It is usually attached with staples, so you must pull these out carefully.
4. Stretch the new grill cloth, you can ask someone to assist you
Then you must attach it to the frame and make sure it is stretched properly so there are no wrinkles on it. You can use clamps as well to hold it in place. You can use small nails or staples to attach it to the wooden frame to secure it properly.
5. Reassemble the amp, by reversing the procedures that you have performed to disassemble it
If you own a typical amplifier, you have to reattach the grill cloth frame to the cabinet first then reattach the speakers; it will depend on what model or brand of amplifier you are using.
