One of the more common issues that electric guitar players usually experience includes dealing with a dead signal while playing. The causes behind this can include: a bad cable, the pickup wiring, or sometimes the issue can be caused by a problem with the output jack.

In this article, we will be helping you out by giving you the information that you need to deal with an output jack issue. Whether you’re looking for a place to purchase an output jack replacement or how you’re supposed to handle the replacement yourself, Sheehan Enterprises is the place you can count on.

What You Need to Know About Replacing Your Electric Guitar’s Output Jack
If you’re looking for information to fix an output jack, make sure to read on to find out. This is a very simple and cost-effective process, so it is a great way to do a simple repair yourself. Here is a step-by-step process on repairing this.

Prepare the following materials before beginning.

  1. Screwdriver
  2. Soldering gun
  3. Solder
  4. A new output jack (check out Sheehan Enterprises for rare guitar and amp parts)
  5. Wire Stripper
  6. Wire Cutters
An important thing to note is that this tutorial will require basic soldering techniques to pull off.
  1. Before doing anything else, you must make sure that the output jack is the issue. If you have checked it over thoroughly and find that the instrument cable is not in place or is loose, it is most likely that the output jack is broken or worn out.
  2. Check the inside wiring. You can do this by simply removing the plate that holds the volume and tone knobs or, depending on the electric guitar model, you may have to remove the pickguard to access the internal wiring.
  3. Once you have the internal wiring in sight, remove the screws and jack plate to see the output jack. Inspect the wiring and make sure there are no loose wires. If there is a loose wire from the output jack then that is the main problem. You have to replace the old one with a new output jack.
  4. If there is a loose connection, you must replace the output jack. (Sheehan Enterprises carry different guitar and amplifier parts; make sure to check out our catalogue of available parts!) Remove and solder one wire at a time so you will not mix up the different connections. The wiring usually comes in two colors, red and black. The black wire is the ground wire while the red wire is the hot output.
  5. Connect the wires to the output jack and use a soldering gun to connect the wires together. Use the wire strippers to expose a small copper at the end of the wire and make sure to twist the ends as this will prevent them from getting frayed and it will allow a solid connection.
Place the wire on the connection point and solder it on using the soldering gun. The connection must be placed firmly and will not be disconnected when in use or when left standing. Leave it for a few minutes (approximately 15 minutes) to allow the solder to cool down.
  6. Test the guitar before attaching the jack plate and screws back in its place. You have to check if the connections are working properly. You can connect the cable to the output jack but be very careful not to pull any wires or make a loose connection.
Check the connections by hooking the guitar to an amplifier. If there is a buzzing sound, that means all the connections are working properly. Congratulations! You’ve done a great job!
