How to Install an Electric Guitar Nut
Owning an electric guitar is fun, but there are certain things that you should know in order for you to care for it properly. If you want to prolong the life of your electric guitar, you should know the different methods on how to fix and install certain parts. In this article, we will be discussing the process of how to properly install an electric guitar nut. Read on below if you want to learn more information about this.

When it comes to guitars, each brand has different, specific styles and their corresponding parts, such as electric guitar nuts. These are usually made from different types of materials. Nuts can be made from wood, metal, plastic, bone, and other synthetic materials and all of these materials work as a good electric guitar nut, however, some types of materials are better than others.

The denser the material is used, the better the nut it produces. When you are trying to replace and install a new nut, you should know what kind of material it was originally made of. The type of material used for the nut usually dictates on how you work with it. If you are going to install a new guitar nut, make sure to follow the steps mentioned below:

1. Check the fret slot and fit the new nut

After purchasing a new nut for your electric guitar, (Make sure to check with us. At Sheehan Enterprises, we carry a variety of rare guitar and amplifier parts) you can check if it fits the slot. Make sure to remove and clean the leftover glue in the slot.

You can use a fret seating file to file and remove the glue or any debris caught inside the slot. Be very careful when filing the slot as this should be done in a straight line so you will not remove any material on the side.

When the slot is clean you can set the new nut in its place. The electric guitar nut must fit perfectly inside and not hang out of the side of the fretboard. If there is excess material, you can file it until it is smooth and fits perfectly inside.

2. Check everything before gluing it in place

Before you glue the new nut in place, you should figure out how you will clamp it down properly when you apply the glue to set it in place. Do not rush this process because it can cause mistakes which will be hard to fix once the glue has set.

3. Apply glue and set the nut in place

You can use wood glue if the nut is made of wood or you can use super glue, it depends on your personal preference. If you are using super glue, you will not need a clamp because it has a faster drying time.

Apply a small amount of glue in the middle of the slot and insert the nut in place. Press the nut all the way into the slot. Avoid glueing it if it hasn’t been set properly. Check both sides of the nut and make sure that there are no sides sticking out on the edge of the fretboard.

If you are using super glue, you can use a spray accelerator and hold it for a few seconds. If you decide to use wood glue you will need to use a clamp to wait for it to dry to hold it in place while it dries for the next few hours. Avoid using too much glue because, in the future, you may want to remove the old nut and install a new one, which is easier to do if you use a small amount of glue.
