What are the materials you need to prepare?

  • Contact cement
  • two box fans
  • solvent (Mineral Spirits)
  • disposable brushes
  • 3 inch trim roller
  • wax paper
  • sharp razor knife or box cutter
  • metal straight edge
  • markers or pencils
  • chalk string
  • masking tape

1. Preparation

Prepare your cabinet. If there are holes or voids, irregular shapes or gaps make sure to fill it up with plastic wood or wood filler. You must avoid any knots on your lumber if you are building the cabinet from scratch.

If you find out that you have knots, you can use super glue to secure them before sanding it. You can use black spray paint for the inside part of the cabinet so you can improve its physical appearance and it can be easier to clean.

2. Layout

You can create cabinets with two pieces, one piece for the two sides and the top and second piece for the bottom. You must check the length of the first piece, and you will need to lay the Tolex piece out lengthwise. You must add extra length for overlap and you can trim it later. Make sure to measure the length, height, and width, use a metal straight edge to guide you with your cuts.

3. Glue the Panels

Lay the Tolex face down and apply glue to the area for the top panel by using a brush or roller and then you can apply glue to the cabinet top. You must apply glue on both pieces to stick them together.

Leave it to dry. Do not put the two pieces together when the glue is still wet. Use lines so you can align the piece properly. Smooth the material with your hands and set it up for approximately 20 minutes.

Do not do the next panel if it still not set. The Tolex will shrink and tighten up as it sets accordingly.

You can now glue the sides one at a time by doing the step by step instructions above. Then, glue the bottom in place and you can fold the flaps on the bottom piece and glue them using the same procedure. You can now trim the side panels if there is any overlap.

4. Check the corners

You can fold the flaps in and box fold the corners and cut it with a razor knife or box cutter, then glue it in place. If you are using metal corner protectors on the corners you can leave a fold in place and you can glue it down.

Finally, you can cut the pieces for the back panels and glue it up using the basic manor as the main cabinet. It is best for you to do the back panels first if this is your first attempt to do this project.

Always have in mind to check the panels and allow the thickness of the multiple layers of the Tolex and as well the thickness of the grill cloth. Let everything set for a couple of hours before you attach the metal corners, handles or other hardware to your cabinet.
